He nodded and scooped the last of the omelette from my plate and tipped it in his mouth.
The coach was quiet, shadowy and kind of ghostly. It was almost midnight and the usual manically busy Paris traffic had trickled to the sporadic whizzing scooter and the odd speeding Peugeot 206. I folded the insurance papers and tucked them into my handbag.
‘All sorted,’ I sighed tiredly. ‘Let’s go.’
Rob stared at me with bright avid eyes. ‘Not so fast,’ he protested firmly, taking my hand and leading me to the back of the coach.
‘Rob, what’re you up to? I’m knackered, let’s go,’ I said, tripping behind him.
‘Sit down,’ he said softly. He placed a finger over my lips and lowered his voice disarmingly. ‘No questions. Be patient.’
I sat down on the back seat, tucked my hands beneath my bottom and looked dazedly down the length of the centre aisle. I watched as his tall, broad frame, barely visible in the gloom, descended the centre steps. He reappeared two minutes later clutching a large quilt. He walked slowly towards me, his lips curved in an ear-splitting smile. He spread the quilt on the floor and clasping my hands in his, he coaxed me to standing.
I felt a surge of blood rush to my face and a flicker of excitement tighten in my chest as I stumbled, smiling, towards him. He slid strong hands beneath my hairline and jutting my chin up roughly with his thumbs, covered my mouth with his. Probing lips attacked mine. Smiling through his kiss, he flexed his fingers in the coils of my hair, cupped my face and gently massaged my neck. I relaxed against him, circling his waist and exploring his jaw with my nose. For a moment we swayed wordlessly.
‘Sit down,’ he said in a grainy voice, ‘on the floor.’ He held my hands and slowly, together, eyes locked, we moved to kneel. ‘Happy?’ he asked.
I nodded in reply. ‘And you?’
His already wide smile grew wider. ‘Couldn’t be happier.’
My stomach did a flippy thing. He lay on his back, pulled me close and palmed my hair in slow gentle strokes. A muted siren sounded in the distance.
‘There’s a difference between having sex and making love. Sometimes I feel no matter what I do, I can’t get close enough to you,’ he said, his voice steady but chalky.
‘What do you mean?’ I whispered.
He stirred a little uncomfortably. ‘I can’t explain it. I think what I mean is that I’m not content to have just your body.’ He tilted my chin to force my gaze to meet his. ‘I want your mind and your heart too.’ There was a faraway look in his eye, as though he was listening hard to something in the distance. ‘And,’ he gave me a lopsided grin and reached to trace my lips with hiy ly los index finger, ‘and I will. I’ll have it all.’
I curled in closer. The hollow of his throat lay soft against my face. ‘Will you now?’ I asked, massaging the flat slant of his belly.
